Beauty Blog: How Often Should You Get a Facial?
Thursday, 26 June 2025

When it comes to skincare...
Facials can be an incredibly relaxing treat. Yet, when taken regularly, they can do wonders for maintaining healthy, glowing skin. One question we're often asked at Riverhills Spa is: how often should you really get a facial?
Unfortunately, the answer isn't one-size-fits-all. It actually depends on your skin type, lifestyle, age, and personal skincare goals. We've written a guide to help you decide how often to book your next facial and explain why consistency can make a difference.
The General Rule: Once a Month
For most people, a monthly facial is ideal. Why? Because it takes approximately 28 days for your skin to complete its natural regeneration cycle. This means every four weeks, your skin cells have gone through renewal, making it the perfect time to book a facial!
Think of it as your skin's reset button, especially if you live a busy lifestyle or spend time in environments that challenge your skin, like air-conditioned offices, urban areas, or outdoor in hard weather settings.
A monthly facial can help your skin:
- Remove dead skin cells
- Clear congestion and unclog pores
- Stimulate collagen production
- Improve skin tone and texture
- Maintain hydration and balance
Your Skin Type Matters
As we mentioned in the introduction, your skin type can influence how long is ideal between facials for you.
Oily or Acne-Prone Skin:
Every 2-3 Weeks: If your skin is prone to breakouts, congestion, or excess oil, a more frequent schedule can help keep inflammation under control. Deep-cleansing facials, extractions, and targeted treatments can support clearer, calmer skin when done regularly.
If you have severe acne and are on medication or a treatment plan, be sure to seek advice with your doctor or dermatologist first. Certain medications or creams may make your skin more sensitive to other skincare ingredients.
Dry or Sensitive Skin:
Every 4-6 Weeks: Gentle hydration-focused facials can work wonders for your skin type, and are best spaced out every month to six weeks. Overdoing treatments could cause irritation, so less can be more, as long as it's consistent.
Mature Skin:
Every 3-4 Weeks: To maintain firmness and minimise signs of ageing, regular facials can help boost circulation and promote cell turnover. Anti-ageing facials often include massage and advanced techniques that stimulate collagen and aid the face muscles.
When to Book a One-Off Facial
If you can't commit to a monthly routine, a facial on an ad-hoc basis can still be beneficial for your skin, and is perfect for a pre-event boost. We recommend booking at least 4-7 days before a big occasion like a wedding or holiday, to allow time for your skin to settle and glow naturally.
What to Do After Your Facial
To keep your skin at its best between treatments:
- Stick to a personalised at-home routine (our therapists can help, don't be afraid to ask!)
- Avoid using harsh scrubs or products with strong actives in too soon after a treatment
- Stay hydrated and use a high SPF to protect your skin from sun damage
- Try to keep stress and poor sleep in check... they can show up on your skin fast!
